Mark Rome’s “Best Practices” presentation given to Houston Chronicle distributors in January of 2008 was outstanding. The presentation was full of valuable insight and relevant information for anyone who currently is, or would like to be, an independent contract newspaper distributor.
As our newspaper moves in the direction of larger distributorships handling multiple titles and a variety of service types, the need is greater than ever that distributors have the necessary skills and business knowledge to successfully handle these increasingly complex distribution operations. The information presented by Mark was right on target, as he shared his best practices for managing a successful independent distributorship and addressed many key and real issues.
This was the most comprehensive presentation on this topic I’ve seen in all my years in Circulation. Though some of the information has been available at different times and from different sources, Mark has combined it with his own first hand experience as a contract distributor and organized it into one easy-to-understand and highly resourceful package.
This makes perfect sense, because, in the end, circulation departments across the country can only achieve real success if their independent distributors are also successful. It must be a win/win.
Carlos De Cancio, Circulation Director, Houston Chronicle
"I've had the opportunity to work with Mark Rome for the last five years. Mark has the ability to keep the needs of all publishers in mind when formulating his business plans. He is an innovative long term planner who keeps overall goals in mind when making decisions. While he is a contractor, he is more of a business partner whose input is valued and necessary. Mark has been used many times as an example to our other distributors. His progressive thinking has streamlined the traditional distribution network by embracing technology and adapting it for his specific needs. Mark has consistently proven that he will go the extra mile to get the job done and exceed goals, projections, and expectations. It has been a privilege to have worked with him these past years."
Tim Sullivan, Retail Sales Manager, Wall Street Journal
"Mark's company worked with me in Houston on home delivery of USA Today. While I enjoyed a great working relationship with Mark in Houston, it has been since that time that Mark has really impressed me. I've made stops in Atlanta, New York and now Dallas since that time. Whenever he calls, it is like we had just spoken last week, even if it was really last year. He shares local and industry news and always seems so plugged in. Mark's just one of those guys you like to talk to."
Guy Rothardt, General Manager - USA TODAY Dallas
"When it comes to newspaper distribution, Mark Rome, Inc can be summed up by one word, ownership. Ownership of the subscriber from the plant to the subscriber's door. Due to industry changes, newspaper representatives are required to cover larger areas, Mark Rome, Inc allows IBD to concentrate on other areas, besides Houston. Mark Rome, Inc is a complete, professional organization."
Adam King, Senior Manager, Central Regions, Investor's Business Daily
